Businesswoman Margaret Smith the mother of Singing Kettle star Artie Trezise has died at the age of 89.
Born in the flat above her parents’ business, Fisher and Donaldson, in Cupar, she spent her early years in Crail while her father ran the East Neuk branch of the bakers.
The family moved back to Cupar in 1928 where Mrs Fisher attended Kirkgate School and then Castlehill and Bell Baxter.
On leaving school she joined the family business and spent a year training at Goodfellow and Steven in Dundee.
In August 1944 she met a Cornish mining engineer, James Trezise. They were engaged a week later and married in St John’s Church, Cupar, on Christmas Day 1945.
Mrs Smith bought M Duncan Ltd fruit and flower shop in the Crossgate and continued to run the shop after the birth of their first son Arthur.
Two more children arrived, Jennifer and John, and they moved to live above the shop in the Crossgate.
The family opened a second branch of the shop immediately across the street.
Mrs Smith took up golf, which became a lifelong passion. The highlight of her golfing career was winning the Burns Cup.
With Margaret Coupar and Sybil Johnston, she formed Cupar Floral Art Club in 1957 of which she was made a life member 10 years ago.
Her husband died suddenly from a heart attack, aged 57, in 1977.
Mrs Smith later married accountant Pat Smith. They made trips to the Canadian Rockies and to the Masters in Augusta.
Together they enjoyed a full social life and when he died in the late 1990s she moved into the sheltered housing complex at Argyle Court in St Andrews.
This meant her social life was even more hectic, but after a series of falls in 2009 she felt it advisable to move into Gibson House where she was comfortable until her peaceful death last Friday.
Mrs Smith leaves behind her three children, four stepchildren, seven grandchildren, 11 step-grandchildren, one great-grandchild and six great-step-grandchildren.
Funeral arrangements include a service at Hope Park in St Andrews at 11am next Tuesday, followed by a cremation ceremony at 12.45pm at Kirkcaldy crematorium.
All friends are welcome and a collection will be made on behalf of Gibson House Care Home.
