Weather defeats Newburgh Highland Games for second year running

Atrocious weather resulting in a waterlogged park saw the cancellation of the Newburgh Highland Games for the second year running at the weekend.
The event was called off late on Friday evening after disappointed committee members had their worst fears about the conditions for the event on Saturday confirmed.
One of the organisers, David Reid, told The Courier: ”There’s little point in having an event where the park is waterlogged and there will be no-one out to watch it.
”The weather has beaten us again just like last year!”
A statement on the Newburgh Highland Games official website later read: ”The Newburgh Games committee are very disappointed to have to cancel the Highland Games. Yet again the weather has been against us with wind, rain and low temperatures forecast.
”The volume of rain that’s fallen over the past 24 hours is also important as the games park is now very wet indeed, which could make it unsafe for competitors and certainly uncomfortable for spectators.
”There will be a committee meeting soon to discuss options for the 2012 Highland Games … just in case we do manage to schedule a new date for this event.”
