A man has been jailed for 10 months for a knife attack which permanently disfigured his victim.
Derek Thomas Campbell (21), a prisoner of Polmont, previously admitted that on January 28 on Catherine Street, Arbroath, he assaulted a man, repeatedly attempted to strike him on the head and body and repeatedly struck him with a knife on the head and body to his severe injury and permanent disfigurement while on bail.
Defence agent Nick Wheelan told Arbroath Sheriff Court his client had been on a night out with friends when he came across the complainer and his girlfriend.
He said: ”Mr Campbell found her sitting down and barefoot. He realised that she was upset and it appeared to him as if there was a difficulty between her and the complainer.
”I understand the Crown’s position is that there is no evidence to support this, although the taxi driver did notice that she was shoeless. Mr Campbell runs across the road to intervene and matters escalate thereafter. Mr Campbell overreacts to these situations.”
Depute fiscal Arlene Shaw requested that the knife involved in the attack be forfeited.
Sheriff Peter Paterson said he had no alternative to jailing Campbell.
He added: ”In these circumstances I am going to remand you for a period of 14 months, discounted to 10 months because of your plea at an early stage.”
He said the sentence would be backdated to Campbell’s first date in custody, January 17.
