Two sent to detention for unprovoked attack in Forfar

Two Angus men have been detained after launching an unprovoked attack on two unsuspecting victims.

Forfar men Lee Ian Hogg (20) and John Francis West (19) appeared at Forfar Sheriff Court on Thursday and were each sentenced to six months in detention.

A third man, Alan Sutherland (19), from Kirriemuir, was given a community payback order and told to pay £250 compensation to one of the victims for his part in the attack.

The alcohol-fuelled assault took place on May 17 on East High Street, Forfar, around midnight.

CCTV cameras on the street captured the incident and the footage was shown during court proceedings.

Hogg and West were seen making their way along East High Street and began shouting at two other men who were walking ahead of them.

The two men did not respond to the remarks being made and continued to walk on.

However, Hogg and West continued to follow the men and shortly thereafter launched into an attack, landing a series of punches and kicks to the heads and bodies of both men.

A scuffle then broke out between the two groups before a third man, Sutherland, appeared in a blue hooded top and became involved.

One of the victims fell to the floor after West struck him with a succession of precise, martial arts-style kicks to the face and he was then continually punched by Hogg.

The sustained attack lasted for roughly two and a half minutes before the three attackers fled the scene.

Hogg, West and Sutherland were each represented by a different solicitor at Forfar Sheriff Court but it was mentioned in all of their defences that alcohol had played a factor in their behaviour.

Sheriff Kevin Veal decided a community disposal was best for Sutherland, given his previous good record and that it allowed him to pay compensation.

However, in sentencing Hogg and Sutherland, he said that punitive measures would have to be taken.

He told the accused: ”There is no doubt that this was an unprovoked and vicious assault.”

Both men had their sentences back-dated to May 18.
