The man known as the ‘Naked Rambler’ has been remanded in custody after pleading not guilty to committing an alleged breach of the peace near a children’s play park in west Fife.
Appearing from custody at Kirkcaldy Sheriff Court on Monday wearing nothing but a pair of brown boots and white socks, Stephen Gough (53), of Eastleigh in Hampshire, denied a charge that on July 20 in Cairncubie Road, Townhill, he conducted himself in a disorderly manner, walked naked in a public place close to a children’s playpark, refused to put on clothing or move away from the park and committed a breach of the peace.
The former marine, who first earned his nickname by walking unclothed from Land’s End to John O’Groats in 2003 after quitting his job as a lorry driver, was handcuffed to a G4S security officer as he made his way to the dock.
Asked by Sheriff Mungo Bovey why he was representing himself in the dock, Gough replied: ”I’ve had bad experiences in the past.”
Kyrsten Buist, prosecuting, said she would be seeking custody diets. Gough did not seek bail and was remanded.
Trial was set for August 23 with an intermediate trial diet on August 10.
