A disabled man who was repeatedly punched in the head by a stranger has described his attacker’s punishment as ”absolutely disgusting”.
William McCann was driving home when a man flagged him down and attacked him.
Thomas Waldron escaped a jail term and was ordered to carry out 100 hours of unpaid work and pay £200 in compensation.
But Mr McCann hit out at the decision, saying: ”I think it is absolutely disgusting because it was totally unprovoked. I just don’t think it’s enough.”
Mr McCann (46), from Mid Craigie, was left with bruising and a burst lip. He suffers from fibromyalgia, arthritis and asthma.
He said: ”I think the punishment sends out the message that you can attack a disabled person and just get a slap on the wrist.”
Waldron (39), of Balmuir Road, had previously admitted that, on May 5, at Meadowside, he assaulted Mr McCann and repeatedly punched him on the head to his injury.
Sheriff Alistair Duff called it ”a wicked crime”, but did not jail Waldron.
He had also admitted kicking a moving car on the same day at the same place.
Dundee Sheriff Court had previously heard that Waldron had flagged down Mr McCann’s car before becoming aggressive and demanding his victim get out.
Mr McCann said he was disabled and not able to get out.
The court heard Waldron responded by saying: ”I’ll give you disabled” before reaching into the window and punching Mr McCann on the head.
