Cowdenbeath notched up a First Division victory on Saturday but could have won more comfortably had their finishing been better.
The Blue Brazil created some really good openings and saw Accies keeper Kevin Cuthbert make some fine saves but their failure to grab a second goal could have cost them as never-say-die Hamilton forced some good chances in the closing stages.
The Fifers led by a Kyle Miller goal after only 12 minutes, the 20-year-old getting on the end of a Scott Linton corner and volleying home from eight yards out.
After that Greg Stewart, Jamie Stevenson (three times), and Marc McKenzie all went close to adding to the Cowden tally.
Accies got better as the game went on and in the closing quarter Stephen Hendrie, Jordan Kirkpatrick and Ally Crawford all had chances for the New Douglas Park men.
Cowden player/boss Colin Cameron was just pleased to rack up three home points, and said: ”I think we fully deserved to win the game. They had some good possession and I expected that this would happen in phases of the match, but we were compact in defence and Thomas Flynn did not have a lot of saves to make.
”We were always dangerous on the break and I thought their keeper made several good stops, so we could have scored at least one or two more goals.”
Match winner Miller, who has been nine years with the club, was delighted to score his second goal in three games.
He said: ”I was signed by the youth section when only 11 years old and it has always been my ambition to get into the first team squad.
”I have had to wait my moment to get into the team but a couple of injury problems have given me the opportunity.
”I suppose in our midfield I am the legs with the boss supplying the experience but I am really enjoying it.
”At the goal I just gambled and raced towards the six-yard box at Scott’s corner kick and suddenly the ball was there.”
Hamilton boss Billy Reid said his team needed to grow up quickly.
”We are a very young side and are making mistakes that can come from inexperience,” he said. ”The goal was a disaster from our point of view with players switching off at a set-piece.
”We were a lot better after the break but we need to grow up quickly in this division.”
