A dangerous dog with a “hatred of police officers” has been ordered to be put down.
Sheriff Douglas Ferguson ordered that the rottweiler be destroyed after hearing how it ran amok in Perth’s Crieff Road area.
Police spotted the out-of-control animal while on duty near McDiarmid Park.
Perth Sheriff Court heard on Thursday that the dog had been running into traffic and that they had attempted to restrain it, fearing an accident.
The beast turned on a police sergeant, biting him on the knee, breaking the skin and forcing him to attend at Perth Royal Infirmary for treatment.
The rottweiler’s owner was later traced and although Connie Furlong initially denied the dog belonged to her, she later claimed her pet.
She explained that the dog had a long-standing problem with police, after being struck with CS spray during previous searches of her property on Strathtay Road.
Ms Furlong advised them that, had he removed his jacket, the sergeant would not have been bitten.
The 40-year-old admitted that on March 6 at Crieff Road and Pullar Road, she was the owner of a rottweiler that was dangerous and not kept under proper control in that it was running free, barking, snarling, growling and bit a police officer on the leg to his injury.
Sheriff Ferguson said, “The dog was out of control — there’s no doubt about that. It could have caused a serious accident.
“In the circumstances, I am bound to make an order for the destruction of the animal.”
