Two sons of well-known footballers have their last chance to make an impact in the Scottish boys’ golf championship at West Kilbride Golf Club today.
Ian Redford son of the former Dundee, Dundee United and Rangers midfielder Ian and Paul McPhee the son of ex-Forfar and United full-back Ian have impressed in the junior ranks before but will aim to confirm their development with a good run in the championship.
Both players originally came out of the King James VI stable in Perth, but Redford has been playing out of the St Andrews New Club for the past few seasons, and did well to reach the fifth round last year, while McPhee has won Scottish boys international honours on the way up but failed to do much in the championship, tumbling out in the second round when a seed last year.
Pollok’s Conor O’Neil is the backmarker in the field at plus 1.9 but seeded only third, with home county hope and reigning strokeplay champion Jack McDonald top ranked and in action this morning.
The 18-year-old from the Kilmarnock Barassie club aims to be only the fourth player to hold the matchplay and strokeplay versions of the national title simultaneously the others being John Huggan, Steven Young and Scott Henry.
Deeside’s Jack Scott, the winner of the opening SGU junior series event in Monifieth last week, is seeded in the bottom half of the draw.
