Angus Council has approved developer Stewart Milne’s plans for 338 houses to be built in Arbroath, at Montrose Road.
The proposals, seen by the development standards committee on Tuesday, were passed subject to a number of conditions one being that a minimum of 68 properties be provided as ‘affordable housing’.
Representatives from Stewart Milne homes were present and said the properties would be built in three phases. The first are expected to be for sale in around 18 months.
Councillor Bob Spink welcomed the development but raised the issue of an impending pedestrian crossing on the A92 and said it was vital the location of such was carefully selected.
The education department estimates that there will be around 85 school-age children in the development and many will have to cross the road to attend Warddykes Primary School.
The council has insisted the developer make several compulsory road alterations and improvements.
Concern comes after road safety campaigners won an eight-year campaign to have a crossing constructed on the A92, an issue which frustrated Councillor David Fairweather at last week’s infrastructure services committee meeting.
On Tuesday, he said he understood safety was paramount on the roads and thought it was a “fantastic” development for Arbroath.
