Dundee businessman John Allardyce has died in Ninewells Hospital following a short illness.
Mr Allardyce (80) was formerly joint managing director of the family firm that became Allardyce Healthcare Ltd, suppliers of wheelchairs and healthcare products.
He joined Charles Allardyce & Son Ltd along with his late twin brother Charles following national service in the Royal Corps of Signals.
The family firm was established in 1890 by the twins’ grandfather, who provided surgical instruments to surgeons working all over Scotland.
Mr Allardyce set up and developed a hearing aid service. He retired from day-to-day involvement 20 years ago but maintained an interest in the firm, where his son Stephen is a director.
Mr Allardyce was a former captain of Harris FP Rugby Club, and played for Harris FP’s cricket team and Forfarshire Cricket Club.
A former deacon of the Bonnetmaker Craft, he was also a former deacon convener of the Nine Incorporated Trades of Dundee, former president of Dundee Rotary and was involved with the charity Tenovus.
He was predeceased by wife Dorothy and son Richard. He is survived by Stephen, daughter Judith and four grandchildren.
