A Dunfermline eye specialist has been presented with flowers at Holyrood as thanks for securing a £6.6 million investment in a new eye-screening service.
Dr Roshini Sanders, consultant ophthalmologist at Queen Margaret Hospital, has pioneered use of a high-tech digital image system that has drastically reduced referral times in Fife.
The only system of its kind in the UK, it instantly emails electronic photos of people’s eyes taken at high street opticians to hospital ophthalmology departments. Dr Sanders said it had already saved the sight of patients who required immediate treatment.
So successful has it proved, she has lobbied intensively for it to be introduced in other Scottish health board areas and last month the Scottish Government announced £6.6 million to fund the roll-out.
Dr Sanders received the flowers from Helen Eadie, the MSP for Dunfermline East, following a meeting of the Holyrood cross-party group on visual impairment.
