Scottish cricket has lost one of its well-known characters with the death of Walter Peggie of Falkland at the age of 78.
He was arguably Falkland Cricket Club’s finest ever player, with a 36-year career to 1985. When he retired from the game aged 51, he had taken more than 1000 wickets and scored more than 6000 runs.
His bowling statistics were remarkable, having bowled 4900 overs, 1599 of which were maidens and taken 1062 wickets at an average of 10.5.
He took all 10 wickets for six runs in a 1975 match against Coupar Angus.
Mr Peggie was born in 1934 and was brought up in Falkland. His father and grandfather were keen followers of cricket, and Mr Peggie started playing at the age of 14, batting at No 11.
Falkland had only one team but when a 2nd XI was started in the early 50s he soon established himself as an all-rounder in the side.
He was club captain in the 60s and 70s and was made an honorary life member in 1979.
He was also a footballer, playing for Newburgh, Jeanfield Swifts, Lomond Vics and the Scotland ATC team.
A slater and plasterer, he took over the family business from his father. He also became mine host of the Stag Inn in Falkland.
