Liz McColgan Health Club closes down after going bust

Olympic silver medallist Liz McColgan has closed the doors of her Carnoustie health club after announcing the business has gone bust.

The six staff at the Liz McColgan Health Club at Panbride were told the shock news on Friday morning. Members were informed by email that the gym had closed.

Ms McColgan said she had used “every penny” of her savings trying to save the business.

She said in a statement: “I can confirm the sad news that Liz McColgan Health Club Company is now bankrupt. For the last few years, through difficult personal circumstances of my divorce, I have put every penny of my savings into trying to keep the company afloat.

“I am now at the stage when I am no longer able to continue to do so. I broke the news today to our six staff and I would like to thank them and our members for their loyalty and support.”

Members received an email saying: “It’s with regret the gym closed its doors today. There is no date for reopening. All members will be notified in due course.”

The front gates of the gym were closed when the Courier visited.
