‘I would take every one of my directors by the throat’ Dundee boss fears Rangers will go bust again

Dundee manager John Brown.
Dundee manager John Brown.

Dundee boss John Brown has admitted he fears that Rangers could go bust for a second time unless there are dramatic changes at the club.

The current crisis at Ibrox saw club legend Walter Smith resigning from his post as chairman following a period of bitter infighting.

“Bomber” believes Rangers are hemorrhaging money at an alarming rate and insists that former chief executive Charles Green, who rejoined the club last week as a “consultant”, is largely to blame for what is going on.

Brown has also expressed his sympathy for former Rangers team-mate and current Light Blues boss Ally McCoist for being put in an impossible situation.

Brown said: “What is going on is a ticking time-bomb. There is infighting in the boardroom but behind it all who is pulling the strings? That is what you need to get to.

“Rangers will be leaking money for fun so it can only go on for so long and then do they put themselves in a position where they have to go back into administration?

“My biggest fear is that Rangers will go back down again because of what is going on. Charles Green was never away. He might have had an extended holiday but he was never away.

“The people who are running Rangers are putting him up front. Rangers will continue to suffer until it is sorted out,” he added.

“It is a nightmare scenario what is going on there. I just wish Coisty all the best. Scottish football needs Rangers to survive but there are too many people at the club who are taking and taking rather than giving.

“Rangers fans give, Dundee fans give to their football club, they don’t take. But there are too many takers at boardroom level and sooner rather than later, there is no money left so what happens? Bang, it is out of business.

“Rangers will go down unless the fans stand up and say enough is enough. That’s the only way.”

The controversial Green wasted no time after his return to Rangers, insisting that it was not acceptable for McCoist to just win another league title this season, he also had to triumph in a cup competition.

That prompted the manager to hit back after the League Cup loss at Forfar on Saturday, branding Green an “embarrassment”.

And Brown backed McCoist to the hilt branding the “consultant’s” comments as: “Disgraceful. I would take every one of my directors by the throat if you had people in position coming out with statements like that.

“I think what Green is doing is covering up what is going on in the background and throwing it on to the manager. Suddenly he comes back after 30-odd thousand season tickets have been sold.

“He is a clown Green and always has been. Some people have bought it because he stands up for certain things but think of the money he has taken out.

“He was given a bonus of 300 plus grand for the team winning the league. What is that all about? Why is the chief exec getting a bonus for the team winning the league?

“That doesn’t stack up. He is just lining his own pockets and until the fans realise that, the club is doomed.

“If I was in Ally’s shoes, I would be worrying every night about my job. He has come out with that statement and has just thrown everything on Coisty when the biggest issue is that the club may go out of existence again because of mismanagement through Green’s stewardship.

“The money is disappearing like you cannot imagine. Ally McCoist will win that division he is in by 20-plus points when he has all his players available. I would put my house on it.

“That’s his job. To win cups he still has a task because a lot of sides will give that Rangers team a right good game but Ally will win that league.

“Charles Green or ‘Chucky’ Green as I would call him because as a football fan I would chuck him out that building . . . as a fan of football seeing what has happened at Hearts and Rangers . . . get them out.

“They are killing the sport in our country. People from the past who have been at Rangers will be turning in their graves at what is going on. It is a cash cow, that’s what it is for people.”
