Dundee’s Overgate centre, sold by Land Securities last year for £125 million, enjoyed an increase in spending by Christmas shoppers.
Footfall for the whole of 2014 was down 1.9%, although that figure was less than the Scottish index figure of 2.6%.
Total spending at the centre’s shops was up 4.5% for the year at £112m, and up 5.6% for December at £17m.
The Overgate was a popular place to buy Christmas and other gift cards with 12.7% more sold last month, worth £480,900, ahead of the whole-year increase of 10% (£935,543).
The centre manager Malcolm Angus said: “Christmas sales were encouraging despite a slow start to the festive period.
“This year’s trend appeared that our consumers were shopping later than previous years. However, our spend within the centre as a whole was 5.6% up.”
The fall in the number of shoppers but increase in money spent at the Overgate could provide more evidence of the practice of shoppers doing their price and brand research online at home before setting out to buy.
Mr Angus said: “It could well be that people these days are more savvy before they spend their money, and they are doing more research away from visiting shops.
“I think our figures show that people in Dundee are committed to shopping locally, and I very much hope that the Overgate shopping centre will continue to be their prime location of choice.”
