Making soap to combat dry skin led Lesley Reid, 33, to launch Willow & Plum in 2013.
The business sells 100% natural skincare products, including eco-friendly soaps, lip balms and bath bombs, all hand made in Lesley’s Fife home.
She talks to Courier Business.
Q How and why did you start in business?
A My business idea was born out of necessity. My job as long-haul cabin crew had caused my skin to become so sensitive, dry and itchy.
High street products weren’t helping, so I made my own.
The first thing I made was the ‘Exfoliating Lavender bar’.
This was a hit among family and friends, and I quickly discovered sensitive skin is a big issue for many people.
Q How did you get where you are today?
A With hard work and commitment, putting the hours in.
My husband has given me so much encouragement and help, and this wouldn’t have happened without him.
Q Who else has helped along the way?
A The best thing I did at the start was contact Business Gateway Fife.
Our business adviser Charles Doeg-Smith has been a great help, and their free seminars have been invaluable.
Q What was your biggest mistake?
A Not being prepared for the Christmas rush two years running.
I tend to run low on stock, then have a massive panic!
Q What is your greatest achievement?
A Our products are now sold in 16 shops across the UK. This is huge for us, and it is all through word of mouth and happy customers.
Retailers approach us regularly to stock our products.
Last year I was able to move production from the kitchen into a purpose-built workshop, which has been great as I am able to leave the house and have some space.
Q What do you hope to achieve?
A The plan for 2015 is to perfect the liquid soap. As everything is made from scratch, it has been on the back burner for a while as it involves the workshop turning into a science lab.
Also a home fragrance range, hopefully in the second half of the year.
Q Do you want to recruit in the future?
A Yes, absolutely. I created a job opportunity for myself and I’d love to do the same for others one day.
Q What is the hardest thing about running your own business?
A The general juggling of things like childcare; and, while working from home, separating housework from work.
Sometimes it’s just hard finding the motivation. As there is no disciplinary process stopping me from watching Lorraine and putting a washing on, I have to be really strict with myself.
Q Any advice to wannabe entrepreneurs?
A Go for it.
Contact Business Gateway.
And really believe in yourself.
