Scottish wave energy firm Aquamarine Power has reached a “waymark” on the road to reliable electricity generation.
It said it had demonstrated through three winters of testing that its Oyster 800 device could withstand all sea states, and progress was being made towards the goal of reliable electricity generation.
The 800kW test device, located offshore at the European Marine Energy Centre in Orkney, is in the midst of a summer refit.
The firm yesterday said the main 23-tonne cylinder module had been replaced in just two days, half the time it took last year.
“This new module incorporates a number of significant upgrades to the one it replaces including new check valves, hoses and control and instrumentation,” said CEO Martin McAdam.
“The Oyster concept clearly works. It is the only wave machine to have operated continuously for three winters, and has generated multiple megawatt hours of electrical power,” added Mr McAdam.
