Dundee furniture business Dovetail Enterprises celebrated the completion of its latest contract with a visit from Enterprise Minister Fergus Ewing.
The Dunsinane Industrial Estate group last week delivered two new suites of furniture designed for dedicated mother and baby cells to HMP Grampian in Peterhead.
While the value of the deal ran to only a four-figure sum, the firm hopes its could lead to further business from the Scottish Prison Service and more success in winning public-sector contracts.
“From a monetary point of view it’s not huge, but the exciting thing for us is we’ve been able to demonstrate that we can take something right though from conception to completion,” sales and marketing manager Ann Jamieson said.
“The furniture has a domestic look and feel to it, but had to meet all the requirements for use in the prison environment meaning it had lots of challenges attached to it.”
Dovetail, a supported business which employs many disabled workers unable to take up jobs on the open labour market, hit the headlines when it won a contract to supply upholstered chairs for use by the royal family and VIPs at the Commonwealth Games.
Ms Jamieson said the contract showed what a great job the firm, which employs 57 staff and turned over £2.3 million last year, could do.
