Perth-based power supplier SSE’s strategy to simplify its business operations has led to the £12 million sale of a major data centre.
The Hampshire facility, which was operated by subsidiary company SSE Enterprise Telecoms, was snapped up by ambitious IT infrastructure group SCC.
SSE said the sale would allow the division to concentrate on its UK-wide high performance, high availability fibre-optic network which provides services to companies whose operations are critically dependent on digital communication.
Under the terms of the deal a small number of employees will transfer to SCC.
SSE finance director Gregor Alexander said: “SSE plc is continuing its business simplification programme, which will secure proceeds and debt reduction estimated to total around £1 billion and ensure SSE plc’s resources are fully focused on its core purpose of providing the energy people need in a reliable and sustainable way.”
SCC chief executive James Rigby said: “This is a significant acquisition, from a major FTSE 100 company, which represents another major step towards our goal to become Europe’s principal IT services business.”
The transaction is expected to complete before the end of this year.
