Maersk Oil UK has awarded Ramboll Oil a wellhead jacket design contract for the Culzean field in the North Sea.
The project is the largest substructure design contract undertaken by the Danish firm on the UK Continental Shelf and comes shortly after it acquired north-east-based oil and gas engineering consultancy Apply Altra as it looked to establish a British presence and strengthen its capabilities.
The Culzean field lies 145 miles east of Aberdeen and, if successfully developed, has the potential to meet around 5% of the UK’s gas demand by 2020/21.
Bjorn Jonsson of Ramboll said the Maersk contract would provide a showcase for his firm’s capabilities to other UK operators.
“Having our name on the paper for such a large platform is great exposure to yards and installation companies, and a step towards working for other companies in Norway and the UK,” he said.
“With water depths reaching approximately 90 metres, Culzean gives us the chance to show that we can design for those clients who face deeper waters compared to the depths we normally design for.”
Meanwhile, two new platform support vessels worth £70 million have been delivered to BP for its west of Shetland operations.
The purpose-built ships, weigh 4,400 and 5,165 gross tonnes, and will operate on the Schiehallion and Clair fields and are equipped with special tanks to transport chemicals needed for enhanced oil recovery schemes.
