Perth-based utility company SSE yesterday launched a recruitment drive for 100 new apprentices.
The energy company employs more than 20,000 workers in total and has taken on at least 100 new trainess every year since 2007.
The firm said it was looking for its 2014 intake to fill posts within it generation, power distribution and contracting divisions and said positions were available at 50 locations across the UK including in Perth, Glasgow and Inverness.
SSE yesterday said apprentices could eventually find themselves overseeing operations at SSE’s wind farm sites, working within its power stations or out in the field helping to maintain the company’s 130,000 km of overhead and underground power lines.
The company’s apprenticeship scheme offers candidates the chance to study for qualifications and get on-the-job training whilst receiving a salary.
Twenty-four-year-old Danielle Watson joined SSE in 2012 and has since been working towards a modern apprenticeship in electricalc ontarcting.
“In my experience an apprenticeship at SSE is a great first step onto the career ladder,” Danielle said yesterday.
“I’ve learnt and done so much already. To be able to earn a salary and pick up industry recognised qualifications is a great combination. I would recommend the scheme to other young people out there looking to kick start their careers.”
Human sources director John Stewart said SSE was committed to providing opportunities for talented young people looking to get a foothold in the jobs market.
“This is an exciting time of year for us when we begin the search for our new apprentices,” Mr Stewart said.
“We believe in offering young people skills and training and the potential to develop a fulfilling career in one of the UK’s biggest and diverse firms.
“There has already been strong interest in the scheme for this year which is not surprising given the range of different roles available.
“We’re proud of the contribution we make to UK plc and of the fact we employ 20,000 people across the country.”
