Engineering and project management firm AMEC has secured the hook up and commissioning support contract for the giant Cygnus gas field development in the southern North Sea.
The company did not disclose the value of the deal but said the contract at its peak would sustain 140 jobs within AMEC’s north east based offshore team,
The agreement with field developer GDF SUEZ E&P UK covers a series of major platform installations and includes the full spectrum of commissioning and completion works.
The contract strengthens the relationship between the companies which has seen AMEC involved with Cygnus from the very start of the project when it provided a front end engineering and design service.
Cygnus is the largest gas discovery in the southern North Sea for 25 years and and is expected to provide heat for 1.5 million homes – around 5% of the total UK marketplace – once in full production in 2016.
Aside from AMEC, the £1.4 billion project is supporting a significant number of jobs in Fife where heavy engineering yard BiFab is currently fabricating huge steel subsea jackets for the Cygnus platforms.
“We are delighted to be able to support GDF SUEZ E&P UK deliver this strategically important development,” Alan Johnstone, AMEC Europe’s managing director brownfield and asset management said.
“This latest award recognises AMEC’s ability to deliver large scale and complex production facilities safely for our customers.”
Overall, the partnership developing the Cygnus field is creating in excess of 4,000 direct and indirect jobs across the UK during the construction phase of the project.
