The Korean engineering giant behind a plan to erect one of the world’s largest wind turbines in Fife is joining with a Scottish firm in a bid to drive down the costs of developing renewable technology.
Recently, Samsung Heavy Industries gained consents from the Scottish Government to test an almost 200-metre-tall 7MW turbine just yards off the coast at Methil.
The company last year awarded Renfrew-based Steel Engineering the contract to deliver the offshore jackets and transition steelwork for the demonstrator turbine.
The two firms have now agreed to work even more closely on an initiative to drive down the long-term costs of renewable energy structure development.
The project will see the firms share best practice in welding and fabrication, skills development and technology.
SHI project manager Chung-Hee Lee said: “Further cooperation is a natural step, and we look forward to sharing techniques and technologies in order to minimise development costs and maximise employee skills and expertise.”
Steel Engineering MD Peter Breslin said: “We are committed to developing our business in the renewables sector and have been working with Samsung for more than a year now.
“We are always seeking to explore new techniques and practices which can reduce long-term development costs in this sector.”
