WARSHIP manufacturer BAE Systems looks set to agree a new deal to boost Great Britain’s Olympic gold medal hopes for 2014 and 2016.
The defence giant is preparing to sign a four-year technology partnership with UK Sport a move which will be worth hundreds of thousands of pounds to the governing body as it prepares for Winter Games in the Russian city of Sochi in two years’ time and the next summer Olympics in Brazilian samba capital Rio.
BAE has already provided engineering support to more than 20 sports, from the bob-skeleton piloted to gold by Amy Williams at the 2010 Vancouver Winter Games to the racing chairs used by paralympic champion David Weir in London this summer, over the last four years.
The firm’s engineers whose usual work involves designing and manufacturing state-of-the-art military jets and submarines have also helped British Cycling with training gear and used their weapons expertise to help pistol-shooting modern pentathletes.
It is expected that a new four-year deal will begin in February, with specific sports and still to be identified.
