Perth-based public transport group Stagecoach has said it had cut its carbon impact by a fifth in the past four years.
The firm’s operations produced almost 1.4 million tonnes of CO2 each year, 56,000 tonnes less than the same figure in 2007/08.
However, measured by carbon intensity which weighs kilos of CO2 emissions against turnover the company said its overall impact had reduced by 22% during the period.
The firm said the progress it had made in reducing emissions was equivalent to the annual CO2 output of nearly 11,000 homes.
The company said its UK bus division had reduced emissions by 18% in the period, while there had been greater progress in its railway operations, with a 23% decrease.
In North America, carbon intensity dropped by 37% and the company achieved a 26% cut in its Canadian operations.
The improvements follow a five-year commitment backed by an £11m green investment programme made by the firm in 2010 to reduce the level of harmful emissions it produces as a business.
Employee initiatives and eco teams set up by staff have been key to driving improvements in energy usage and carbon efficiency.
