The amount of carbon dioxide emitted by industry across Scotland rose during 2010.
The Scottish Environment Protection Agency’s (SEPA) pollutant release inventory shows a 7.5% increase in CO2 emitted from Scottish industrial sites compared to 2009.
Conversely, releases of methane another greenhouse gas dropped by 6.5% over the same period.
The SEPA figures are provided by individual operators.
Martin Marsden of SEPA said: “Methane is a powerful greenhouse gas, and therefore the fact that emissions are falling in Scotland is good news for Scotland’s environment.
“However, analysis of the information for 2010 shows that emissions of another greenhouse gas, carbon dioxide, increased by 7.5%.
“From 2007 till 2009 we had seen a general trend of decreased carbon dioxide emissions, so this increase for 2010 is disappointing.”
Mr Martin said the inventory allows the public to keep tabs on emissions year-round.
