Troubled shoe retailer Barratts has pledged to retain its Dundee branch under its new management.
The Bradford-based company went into administration in December, blaming a downturn in consumer spending.
However, management at the shoe chain have struck a deal to buy 89 of the shops, including the Dundee store.
The deal, with the existing management team including chief executive Michael Ziff, will protect 1,184 jobs. However, 39 stores and 14 concessions will close.
Around 1,600 jobs have already been lost after attempts to find a buyer for Barratts’ concessions business failed. This did not affect the standalone stores.
A spokesman for the Overgate shopping centre said the Dundee branch was one of its most successful and the new owners had committed to retaining the location for the ”foreseeable future.”
Lingerie retailer La Senza, which has undergone a similar administration process, has also confirmed its Overgate store will remain open.
The centre has been further boosted with the news that Vision Express is set to open there in the spring. The optical retailer is moving from its current location in the Wellgate Centre into a 2,334 square foot unit.
Vision Express has signed a 10-year lease and is expected to open its doors late next month.
Since being acquired by Land Securities just over 12 months ago Overgate has strengthened its range of retailers, with other new additions including Superdry, Stormfront and Paperchase.
Jonathan Buckle, Land Securities portfolio manager, said the shopping centre had continued to perform strongly in the face of tough trading conditions on the high street.
He said: ”We are delighted that Vision Express has decided the best place for it to trade from in Dundee is Overgate.
”It is a great addition to what is already the strongest range of retailers in the city, and will give shoppers yet another top name to choose from when they visit the centre.
”It is also very positive news that both Barratts and La Senza will continue to operate at Overgate due to the strong performance of those stores, while we are in detailed discussions with a number of parties regarding the very small number of void units remaining in the centre.
”It all adds up to a very strong picture for Overgate and retail in Dundee city centre, and we will continue to work hard to further enhance the experience for shoppers in 2012.”
