A Mearns food firm has scooped the top award for chocolate cake in a contest aimed at celebrating innovative new products.
Macphie of Glenbervie, a leading independent food ingredients manufacturer, saw off stiff competition to take centre stage with its brownie ready mix for caterers at the innovation awards run by the Grampian Food Forum.
The awards honour the very best of the north-east’s food and drink products, providing a benchmark for the industry to aspire to.
The expert judges, led this year by Tesco chairman David Reid, included Aberdeen Malmaison manager Andy Roger and Skye cookery writer and cook Lady Claire MacDonald.
After a marathon tasting session, they praised Macphie’s brownie for standing out from the crowed with its excellent rich chocolate flavour and gooey, fudgy texture.
Macphie marketing manager Jania Boyd said, “We were confident that the brownie would be a great success with our customers.
“We are thrilled that the judging panel agreed and it has been duly recognised.
“As a company we never stand still, we continue to push ourselves to offer exciting and innovative new products to meet ever-evolving consumer trends.”
The award is the latest in a string of industry accolades for the company which employs 230 people.
