FETTERCAIRN SHOW: Lady moo moo reigns in the rain

A Limousin cross heifer taking the show circuit by storm was crowned the supreme champion of champions at the Fettercairn Show.

Torrential rain may have caused a headache for stewards and journalists attempting to record championship wins, but it was business as usual for competitors.

The top title of champion of champions was judged by a trio from the show society’s honorary presidential team president Jim Brown, vice-president William Ross and past president Ken Nichol.

This year’s contest was between the beef interbreed champion and overall sheep champion.

The judges said it was a close contest but the beef champion reigned supreme for being an “outstanding beast”.

The prestigious accolade went to the cross champion from Blair Duffton and Rebecca Stuart.

Bought at the Thainstone Spectacular in September last year for £3,800, 19-month-old Limousin cross heifer Lady Moo Moo, is by Haltcliffe Donny and bred by Grant Morrison at Newtack, Keith. Her Fettercairn win follows taking the cross championship at Angus last month.

Standing in reserve in the beef interbreed championship was the Limousin breed champion from Andrew and James Gammie of Drumforber, Laurencekirk.

Their home-bred yearling bull Westpit Jockey is by Plumtree Deus and out of Westpit Gabby.

In the sheep rings the interbreed championship title went to the Suffolk breed champion from James Scott, Strathview, Ingliston, Forfar. Their Fettercairn win follows taking the breed championship at Fettercairn last year as well as the champion at Angus this year and last.

Redbrae Real Deal, which was bought at Stirling as a lamb, is by Ardlea Atomic and it also stood as male champion at Kirriemuir last year.

The reserve sheep interbreed title went to a three-crop Texel ewe from Alistair and Tom Greenhill, Westhall, Kellas, Dundee.

The Ettrick-bred ewe was bought at the Select Seven sale it is by Ettrick Rainbow Warrior and was placed at the Royal Highland last month.

In the equestrian ring, the coveted overall championship went to the Royal Highland champion. Put forward by Susanne Shepherd of East Brachmant, Durris, West Lodge Alexander is by McLeod of Inverdarroch.

Simmental Gerald and Morag Smith, Drumsleed, Fourdon, with home-bred six-year-old cow Drumsleed Adalucia, by Blackford Vivaldi and out of Drumsleed Primrose. Shown successfully as a heifer, she was champion at Fife this year. Reserve Heather Duff, Pitmudie, by Brechin, with October-2013 born bull Overhill House Eragon, by Raceview All Star KK and out of Woodhall Ada. Bought in February at Stirling for 7,800gn.

He was on his first outing from the Greenferns flock. Reserve Callum Naismith, Balmaleedie House, Grangehall, Marykirk, with a bought in ewe bred by Aberdeenshire breeder, Freida Brownlie.

Blackface Peter Myles, Dalbog, Edzell, with a three-shear ram bought at Ballymena, Northern Ireland, as a lamb, for 500gns from Billy Grant. He was champion at Angus last year and is by a 6,000gns Harkin sire. Reserve R Holman-Baird, Rickarton Farms, Stonehaven, with a tup lamb by a Glen Cally sire bought at Stirling in 2013 which is an ET brother to a £3,400 tup. His d am is by a Netherwood-bred tup.

Suffolk James Scott, Strathview, East Ingliston, Forfar, with last year’s champion here which also stood champion at Angus in 2014 and last month. Redbrae Real Deal, which was bought at Stirling as a lamb is by Ardlea Atomic and also stood male champion at Kirriemuir, last year. Reserve Sarah Finnie, Newseat, Balthangie, Cuminestown, Turriff, with a two-crop ewe bred by Graeme Christie and bought at the Thainstone Christmas Classic in 2013. Reserve female here last year, she is by Strathisla Seabird.

Beltex Graeme and Fiona Burke, Cairndrum Cottage, Edzell, with a former champion winner here, an Airyolland Kingsize-sired four-crop ewe on her first outing of the season. She is out of a ewe by the Rustler. Reserve Allan Alston, Drumchapel, Chapelton of Menmuir, Brechin, with a gimmer that was placed at Angus. She is by Woodies Tyson and out of a home-bred ewe.

Cross sheep David Black, Minard, Cortachy Road, Kirriemuir. Champion was a pen of three Scotch Mule gimmers bred at Middle Hull and bought at Forfar, last year. They were first at Alyth and Angus shows and will be sold at Forfar in September. Reserve from Mr Black was the reserve winner from Angus and Alyth shows, a pen of three Texel cross gimmers also bought at Forfar last year. Bred at Pitnacree, they are out of Texel cross Cheviot ewes and will also be sold at Forfar in the back-end.

Texel Alistair and Tom Greenhill, Westhall, Kellas, Dundee, with the breed leader from Alyth Show, an Ettrick-bred ewe bought at the Select Seven sale. This three-crop ewe that also stood champion at Kirriemuir last year is by Ettrick Rainbow Warrior and was placed at the Royal Highland last month. Reserve and Agricar champion, Allan Alston, Drumchapel, Chapelton of Menmuir, Brechin, with a gimmer by Deveronvale Ullyses and out of a Cambwell ewe by Cambwell Laird bought at the Select Seven Sale.

Jacob Barbara Webster, No 2 Cottage, Higham Farm, Newburgh, Fife, with the breed leader at Alyth, Carrochy Nairn, a home-bred twoshear ram by Carrochy Jags out of a home-bred ewe. Reserve Jennifer Milton, Newton of Auchindachy, Keith, with Cairdswood Cassius, a tup lamb by Hyndshaw Ryan, out of a Hope ewe. February-born, he was on his first outing.

Any other breed Champion and reserve David Miskelly, Corrybrae, Kildrummy, Alford, with Zwartbles. Champion was a home-bred gimmer by a Speyside ram bought privately and out of a Bobet ewe bought at Carlisle. She was placed here as a ewe lamb. Reserve an end of January born tup lamb by the same sire and out of a home-bred ewe.
