Beef Shorthorn judge Geoff Riby, Low Stonehills, Bridlington, made steady progress through the classes and had no hesitation in praising what he called a “wonderful show”.
“The bulls were of the clean, modern type and this bodes well for the future,” he said.
“Locomotion was generally good and the champion had power, correctness and star quality.”
This was intermediate champion Millerston Full Throttle from Jack Ramsay, of Millerston, Mauchline.
Full Throttle is by Podehole Beefeater and out of Millerston Irania.
He was first at the National Calf Show in 2012, breed champion at Perth and second prize winner at the Royal Highland last year.
The reserve overall Shorthorn was the senior champion Carrarock Chalkie, shown by James Porter of the Uppermill herd, Upper Ballinderry, Lisburn, Belfast.
This one was bred by fellow Irishman Thomas Staunton and is by Alta Cedar Perfect Storm and out of Carrarock Ruthie.
Chalkie was junior male champion at the National Beef Shorthorn Show at Castlewellan and overall champion at the Tullamore Show last year.
The Shorthorn female sale was led by James Porter selling to Sean Macearnan, Lucker Lower, Co Cavan. The rising two-year-old Uppermill Fifi sold in calf to Uppermill Gladiator for 5,000 gns. Fifi is by Ardoyne Bombus and out of Uppermill Flo.
Donald Biggar, Grange, Castle Douglas, sold three to Sarah Wilkins, Rumsden Farm, East Sussex.
Chapelton Duchess by Chapelton Typhoon led the field at 4,600 gns. She was sold in-calf to Stonehills X Factor.
The next to Ms Wilkins were both knocked down at 3,800 gns. Chapleton Sister is by Glenisla Banqo and Chapelton Nettle by Cavans Yankee.
Both were sold in-calf to Stonehills X Factor.
By the end of the sale 48 Beef Shorthorn females had sold to a record average of £2,492, up £406 on the year.
The clearance rate was 96%.
