Football fans tuned in to a new viewing experience over the weekend, when the first match to be widely available in 3D was broadcast.
A number of pubs across Tayside and Fife screened Saturday’s top-of-the-table Premiership clash between Manchester United and Chelsea using the new service, which was rolled out to more than 1000 pubs nationwide through Sky 3D.
Games shown in three dimensions found favour with customers, as venues using the service were busy with interested parties.
Almost 100 punters were at the Kinloch Arms in Carnoustie to see Chelsea win 2-1 creating a somewhat surreal scene for the unsuspecting punters who popped in for an afternoon pint but didn’t quite know what to make of the the goggled-eyed clientele.
Licensee Jonathon McInally said, “Everyone who came along for the game was raving about it and I think 3D football on the telly really is the future.”
At Braes in Dundee, manager Scott Clark said the feedback they received was “brilliant.”StunningHe said, “It was really good and went down universally really well.
“The demo shows golf and other sports and I thought it was stunning.”
Discussing the black-rimmed glasses needed to watch the game on an adapted TV, Scott added, “It was like we were at a Buddy Holly convention or something.”
Club Bar manager Eddie Gormley said people aged 19-30 seemed most interested in the technology, but that “everybody enjoyed it.”
John Black, who owns the Fort Bar in Broughty Ferry, said 3D is “definitely the way to watch sport in the future.”
Sky will show five more Premiership games in 3D before the end of the season, with the next the Manchester derby on April 17.
