Kirkcaldy’s last shop for DVD rentals has closed its doors.
Global Video, which operated on the High Street’s west end for more than 10 years, has blamed the closure on a combination of factors, including the economic climate, online rentals and piracy.
The Glasgow company first encountered difficulties in June 2006 when it was forced to close 40 shops around the UK and call in the administrators.
At the time, the Kirkcaldy outlet was one of five more profitable branches in Fife that were kept open, but the shop struggled to compete with the power of the internet.
The Global Video brand was launched by businessman Maq Rasul in 1985 and reached its peak in the 1990s when the chain had more than 260 shops in Scotland, England and Wales and employed 1300 staff.
