Internet-savvy Perth church takes worship into the cloud

A Perth church has embraced the latest technology to reach out to the wider world.
St Matthew’s, the landmark Church of Scotland on Tay Street, is webcasting regular services, along with weddings, funerals and baptisms.
Having wanted to create an audio link to the congregation’s Sunday morning creche for a number of years, the Rev Scott Burton suggested that, with modern technology, it would be even better to have a video link.
Several cameras and other equipment will be used in a variety of ways including transmission to the creche during Sunday worship.
Housebound members of the congregation can watch services live or have a DVD recording sent to them.
Parishioners can also have their special services beamed to relatives thousands of miles away and the equipment even acts as a CCTV system for the protection of church premises.
A recent wedding was streamed to Norway for members of the bride’s family who could not manage to attend in person.
The innovation was made possible thanks to a generous, anonymous, donation from one of the St Matthew’s Church members.
