Channel 4 is to award a prize of £25,000 to one of the teams competing in Abertay University’s Dare to be Digital competition this year.
A panel of judges will decide which team should receive the money plus additional mentoring support to help develop their game further.
Colin Macdonald, the former studio manager of defunct Dundee games developers Realtime Worlds and now Channel 4’s games commissioner, said: ”I have been involved in mentoring and judging Dare to be Digital since its early years and never cease to be amazed by the quality of games produced in such a short space of time.
”Our contribution to Dare 2012 represents part of Channel 4’s commitment to uncovering and developing great talent in the UK’s games industry and this prize is a great opportunity for Channel 4 to work with the next generation of UK games developers, and I look forward to getting to play some absolutely fantastic games.”
Dare to be Digital launched on Monday.
Fifteen teams comprising a total of 75 students will spend the next nine weeks developing their game concepts before they are showcased at August’s Dare ProtoPlay festival in the Caird Hall.
The overall winner, who will receive Bafta’s One to Watch award, will then be chosen.
