The £50 million Titian on loan to Dundee has been brought to life at a lecture in the city by a world expert on the Italian painter.
Professor Peter Humfrey, of St Andrews University, presented the illustrated lecture on Diana And Actaeon to around 40 people on Thursday in The McManus, where the painting is on display.
The masterpiece, which will be in Dundee for the next three weeks, depicts hunter Actaeon’s discovery of the secret bathing place of Diana, goddess of the moon and hunt.
Prof Humfrey discussed the circumstances of the painting’s original commission, its dramatic subject and the importance of saving it for the nation. The hour-long lecture was followed by questions from the audience.
The painting has already been seen by thousands of visitors during its first week in Dundee. The display will be the last chance to see it in the UK before it travels to America as part of a National Galleries of Scotland exhibition, returning late next year.
The masterpiece was bought for the nation from the Duke of Sutherland last year for £50 million.
