A renowned artist is turning down the bright lights of London and New York to unveil his latest paintings and drawings in a Broughty Ferry studio.
Peter Howson has agreed to display his work in the Eduardo Alessandro Studios in Gray Street, marking a significant coup for the gallery.
The artist, famed for his mood-filled paintings centred on the human form and often religion, selected Dundee thanks to a long association with the gallery’s partner Sandro Paladini.
“I first met Peter in London around 1985 when he was exhibiting in a small show alongside other newly graduated Scottish artists of that time, such as Stephen Campbell and Adrian Wisneski,” said Mr Paladini.
“Only eight years later, in 1993, his major retrospective at the McLellan Galleries announced his extraordinary talent to the wider world. It is extremely pleasing that Peter has agreed to show some of his most recent work with us.”
The exhibition, Peter Howson New Works, gets under way next month and will be the second time the artist has shown his art in the studio.
“He was very keen to show in the Tayside area despite being a household name,” said Mr Paladini. “It tends to be, in more recent years, London or New York but I think the idea of an intimate show appealed to him.
“He loves drawing to him it is as essential as breathing. As a result he has produced copious quantity of drawings that often don’t get the chance to be seen.”
The exhibition opens on Saturday, August 6, and runs daily except Sundays until Tuesday, August 30. It can also be viewed at www.eastudios.com from August 4.
A free illustrated catalogue is available from the gallery upon request.
