TV presenter Lorraine Kelly has launched this year’s Dundee University degree show at an event for figures from the worlds of art and design.
The GMTV host declared the exhibition open on Thursday, following a catwalk show of work from graduating students of Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design.
Lorraine said that during her time as university rector the show was one of the “highlights of the year.”
She said, “It has a brilliant reputation for being innovative, exciting and cutting-edge.
“It’s a great to see all the talent. It’s very humbling and one of the things I like about it is that it covers the whole range.
“There’s stuff that is really way out there and things that are very traditional, so there’s something for everybody.”
Students and their families will join guests at a preview evening on Friday, with the event opening for the public on Saturday for a week.
The show features work from over 250 graduates across 11 disciplines.
The show returns to the college buildings after a move last year to the Vision building in nearby Seabraes. That show drew 11,000 visitors.
Principal Professor Pete Downes said the industry night had drawn practitioners from all aspects of the art and design community.
He said, “Duncan of Jordanstone is so well-recognised as a centre now that people want to come and enjoy the experience of seeing the new graduates and what they are producing.”
Textile designer and exhibitor Taisir Gibreel (34) said the industry night was a valuable opportunity to showcase her work.
She said, “Primarily, I’m showing my weaving because, as a craft, it’s struggling a little bit and there are not as many weavers as there were before.
“I’m promoting my weaves because I would like to start my own business eventually.”
The Dyers Craft of Dundee, one of the Nine Incorporated Trades, presented artist Linsey McGregor with a prize of £300 for the best use of colour in the jewellery section of the show.
