Enthusiasts for the work of Stella Steyn can now admire a selection of her paintings at Perth Museum and Art Gallery.
Regarded as one of the most promising artists of her generation, Steyn was born in Dublin in 1907 and illustrated the serialised version of James Joyce’s novel Finnegan’s Wake.
The exhibition in Perth will be the first UK showing of her paintings in a public gallery and has been launched as part of this year’s Festival of the Arts.
Studying in Paris in the 1920s, she met playwright Samuel Beckett and James Joyce, going on to enrol at the Bauhaus in 1931 after a move to Germany.
Highlights of the display include her graphic designs of that period as well as studies of women closely modelled on her own image.
Many of the images are on loan from the British Museum, the Government Art Collection, Thomson, Roddick and Medcalf Auctioneers and a private collection in Scotland.
A free gallery tour will take place next Wednesday from 12-1pm, where a guest curator will give a personal insight into Steyn’s work.
Places are limited, so early booking is advised by contacting Ann or Pauline on 01738 632488.
The exhibition will continue until October 16.
