Almost 60 years after his death, the life and work of Brechin artist David Waterson is more widely appreciated than before thanks to a virtual gallery.

Barely recognised outside his home town, Waterson’s stature is being reassessed as the number of visits to the gallery only opened three months ago approaches 1000.

Visitors to the website come from all over the world.

As preparations are made by Angus Council to rededicate the Waterson Memorial Collection which will go on public display when Brechin’s Town House Museum reopens after refurbishment, the council has also agreed that the David Waterson Memorial Trust founders of the virtual gallery can display the images of the remainder of its Waterson collection on their website.

Over two years, the David Waterson Trust found nearly 1500 works held by 12 major galleries and 65 private collectors, and that figure is steadily increasing.

“We are very grateful for the co-operation of the council and its cultural services senior service manager Norman Atkinson for being kind enough and far-seeing enough to allow us access to its complete collection,” said trust chairman John Ritchie.

“We continue to seek out images of the many works painted by Waterson during the 12 months he stayed in Sweden. We have only one so far and hopefully time and patience will reap the rewards.”
