Music fans looking to start the year with a bit of culture can enjoy a performance by Scottish Opera when it comes to Birnam as part of a 15-date tour.
Taking place from 7.30pm on February 12 at the Birnam Arts and Conference Centre, Opera Highlights will feature arias, duets and ensembles from well-known operas including The Magic Flute, The Merry Widow and La Traviata.
There will also be a sprinkling of lesser-known works to surprise even the most ardent opera buff.
Scottish Opera’s head of music Derek Clark hand-picks each song and he said, “As well as choosing familiar favourites I try to introduce something that people won’t recognise. There’s also a couple of pieces from operas in our current season we have excerpts from Mozart’s The Marriage Of Figaro and Bizet’s Carmen.
“This is a very different experience from going to a full opera and I hope people will enjoy the more informal and intimate atmosphere that Opera Highlights creates. It’s a great way to try opera for the first time.”
Four talented young singers and pianist Alison Luz will bring the works to life in an entertaining semi-staged performance directed by Dafydd Burne-Jones.
Tickets cost £11, with a discounted price of £5 for those aged under 26, and are available by contacting Birnam Arts and Conference Centre on 01350 727674, going online to www.scottish opera.org.uk or calling 0844 847 1645.
