Mogwai tour stops off in Perth

Mogwai are back back on tour and back with a new album for 2011 which sees them raise the pace and push the boundaries of where art meets rock even further.

Hardcore Will Never Die, But You Will will be released on St Valentine’s Day on the band’s own Rock Action Records.

The follow-up to 2008’s The Hawk Is Howling, it showcases Mogwai’s relentless devotion to duty and refusal to compromise sonically, which didn’t sit easily with the band at first.

Guitarist, keyboard and synth player Barry Burns explained, “It’s our seventh album. We felt a bit weird about it when we were writing it and when we heard it recorded.

“It’s a big departure for us lots of major chords and faster songs, so we’re not really in our comfort zone.”

Their UK tour brings them to Perth Theatre for a sold-out concert on Friday night.

“It’ll be great fun on this tour, as it’s quite a long one and we’ll be playing at quite a few places we haven’t been to for a while,” Barry added.

“I’ve only been to Perth once but I’m looking forward to playing it’ll be fun.”

This part of the world holds special memories for Barry.

“The first gig I ever played was at the Caird Hall in Dundee, supporting the Manic Street Preachers, so I suppose you could say it’s my spiritual home.

“I played the flute I just came on and made a noise for a bit. All the band wants is to play live it’s not much fun being in a studio.”
