The Wombats are back, loud and kicking, with a brand-new single Jump Into The Fog already giving them another top-40 hit in January.
Ahead of this weekend’s gig in Dundee, drummer and backing vocalist Dan Haggis told Rocktalk, “Musically, it’s got a different feel for us. It feels more grungy and laid back but at the same time it’s got this happy chorus.
“It wasn’t even supposed to be a single. We thought it was too edgy but the guy at Radio 1 said ‘that’s got to be the single’ so we went with it.”
It comes from their second album The Wombats proudly present … This Modern Glitch, released on April 25, which has been tipped to be another big hit for them.
It features a variety of producers including Rich Costey (Muse, Interpol, Franz Ferdinand), Jacknife Lee (U2, Snow Patrol, R.E.M.) and Eric Valentine (Queens of the Stone Age).
“It’s an energetic album, lyrically darker but with a little twinkle in the eye,” Dan says. “It’s not to be taken too seriously. It’s a typically British thing it’s all about laughs, you can’t take things too seriously.”
The Wombats come to Fat Sam’s as part of their promotional tour for the album and Dan has special memories of the last time they played in Dundee.
“It was at the Westport Bar and it was a great night. There were these two guys fighting and they fell down the stairs but it just added to the evening!”See them at Fat Sam’s on Sunday night. Advance tickets are £14.30 including booking fee, from Groucho’s. Doors open at 7pm.
