Over 25 years after forming as a three-piece, Dundee gypsy jazz band Havana Swing have been asked to play Glastonbury.
As if that is not enough cause for celebration, the news comes hot on the heels of being nominated for the first time at the Scottish Jazz Awards.
“It came out of the blue,” lead singer and rhythm guitarist Alan Legrand said of the Glastonbury invite.
“Calum, our double bass player, turned round to us one night and said he’d had an email from an agent in Huddersfield, who puts together the Bourbon Street stage at Glastonbury, asking if we’d like to play at the festival.
“It didn’t take long for everybody to say yes. It’s such a flattering thing.”
Like their invitation to Glastonbury, the nomination for the early jazz band of the year at the Scottish Jazz Awards came “out of the blue,” Alan said.
“So it’s all happening, but this should have happened 40 years ago for me I’m 63 and retired,” he added.
The Scottish Jazz Awards 2011 will take place at the Tron Theatre, Glasgow, on June 28. Fans can vote at www.surveymonkey.com/s/FVDH799.
