Colin MacLeod is The Boy Who Trapped The Sun band name it might be and he might be going out with a band now, but TBWTTS is all his creation and is the cover for his songwriting and producing talents.
Having played solo and acoustic for yonks, Colin has assembled a band to take his new album out on the road and was busy fine tuning everything, including the instruments, ahead of his tour.
“We’ve been busy rehearsing and making sure everything’s road tested before we go out on the road.
“I’ve been doing a lot of stuff on my own for a while and I wanted to work with a band, so it’s bass, drums and guitar on this tour.”
That tour brings The Boy Who Trapped The Sun to The Doghouse in Dundee on Tuesday (May 25) supporting Kassidy.
“I’ve been touring by myself. I just got used to doing it that way I hadn’t really thought about a band,” Colin adds.
“I was playing acoustic and usually it’s fine, but when it comes to playing festivals you do need a band behind you.
“I’m playing the T-Break Stage on the Saturday, which should be fun. I haven’t been there for ages.Americana”I think the last time I was there The Darkness were headlining. I went to see Muse instead.
“My musical taste varies though. I’ve been listening to Local Natives a lot but generally speaking it’s Wilco, Dylan, Neil Young, lots of Americana really, west coast stuff.
“It’s just because it’s so good, you can’t get past it, bands come and go and a lot of them are great. You get people like Jack White doing great stuff but that’s because he takes a direct line from old blues and Dylan.”
Having gigged in Glasgow and started writing his debut album, Colin was shocked when it was picked up by prestigious record label Geffen Records, who offered him a five-year deal.
“It was a big surprise when Geffen called with the offer,” he said.
“Myself and my manager had a plan to self-produce the album. We approached quite a lot of labels, with the usual responses, but Geffen liked what they heard.
“We’d already started making it and they paid for it. They gave me complete control though, left me to get on with it. It was really cool.
“When they got the finished album the only thing they wanted was more tracks.”
The Boy Who Trapped The Sun support Kassidy on Tuesday at The Doghouse. Panda Su is also on the bill. Tickets are £9 (£7) and it’s a 14 and over gig. Doors open at 8pm.
