A former Dundee College dance student is back on his old stomping ground this week as Steven Martin trains at The Space with Retina, a Belgian dance company.
Steven gained an HND in contemporary dance at the college in 2007 before starting his apprenticeship with Scottish Dance Theatre at The Rep.
He finished his apprenticeship before heading to London to audition.
“I gave myself six months in which to take part in auditions and find work as a dancer and it took almost exactly that long,” he said.
“I was contemplating giving up and returning to Scotland when I successfully auditioned with Retina, the very last audition I had planned.”
The former Glenrothes resident then headed for Antwerp for rehearsals with Retina and has since toured Europe with the company.
Now Steven is back at The Space helping train students as part of a residency by the company.
Retina aren’t the only visitors to the dance and theatre The Space at the Kingsway Campus this week as 20 Swedish dance students and 10 from colleges around Scotland also training there as part of an EU-funded project to encourage cultural diversity and understanding.
The Space dance director Peter Royston said, “This is part of an exchange programme between us, Swedish college Folkuniversitetets in Linkoping and Ydance the national youth dance organisation.”
