A production that highlights the hardships inherent in making a living from the sea opens at The Space tonight.
The Good Hope was written by Dutch playwright Herman Heijermans and is being performed by Dundee College acting and performance students in a version translated by Billy Elliot author Lee Hall.
Switching the action to the east coast of Scotland, the play examines the moral dilemma of balancing profit against people’s lives.
With a whole community dependant on the success of its trip, The Good Hope heads to the rich fishing grounds of Greenland during a raging storm.
The play tells the story of the boys and men who go to sea and the women who are left behind.
“We took the students on a field trip to the East Neuk of Fife and visited the Scottish Fisheries Museum in Anstruther to gain an insight into the lives of fisher folk and their families,” said director Paul Christie.
The Good Hopes runs until Friday at The Space on the college’s Kingsway Campus.
