An inspirational play written by a St Andrews University student about Northern Ireland’s first gay rugby team has debuted at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.
The true story of the Ulster Titans is the musical debut of third-year English student Tim Foley and runs until August 29.
The musical, Scene Of Titans, is set in Belfast’s biggest gay club, The Kremlin, when regular Terry proposes setting up a rugby team to impress a fellow player.
The show then follows Terry and his seven friends as they set up Ireland’s first gay rugby team in a bid to win an international competition in Dublin.
The Ulster Titans were set up in 2007 to give people the opportunity to play rugby despite their background.
Tim, a former player on the team, said the Ulster Titans have backed the show, while it has also received the support of former England international Ben Cohen.
“Most people can’t believe the story is true,” Tim said.
“They also can’t believe I wrote the story and the songs hopefully they will like at least one or the other.”
He added, “A number of the Titans players have contacted me, wondering what character is based on them.
“A few of them are going to try and come over and see it.”
