Former primary school teacher Hayley plans ambitious expansion of Dundee sports firm

Hayley Donnelly plans to expand her racquet based sports business via franchise.

A Dundee-based sports business has unveiled ambitious national franchising plans.

Racquet Buddies, which offers classes for a range of age groups, teaches transferable racquet skills which can be used in tennis and badminton, while developing motor skills and coordination, as well as listening and social skills.

The project was founded by former primary school teacher Hayley Donnelly in 2013 and now offers 14 toddler and primary classes for almost 200 children and across Dundee, Angus and Fife, generating a turnover of £70,000.

Ms Donnelly now has plans to expand the business, by recruiting 1,000 participants age two and upwards over the next three years, initially branching into Perth and Perthshire, Angus and North Fife, but with the aim of securing Scotland-wide coverage.

Ms Donnelly has adopted a franchising model to achieve the firm’s growth plans.

She said: “We are now looking to identify people who not only have a passion for sport and healthy living but who enjoy working with children and who, ideally, might also have teaching experience.

“This is a great opportunity to deliver the fun and educational product I’ve put my efforts into while building your own business, perhaps around you own family commitments, and really making a difference to countless children in your community.”

Franchisees will have ongoing support, scope to work across Scotland, comprehensive and detailed lesson plan packs and games manuals.

Ms Donnelly added: “Many other exercise classes for children are rather formulaic but we put a huge amount of effort into ensuring that our classes are varied, stimulating and engaging.

“When it comes to younger children, our classes make a huge difference.”

Ms Donnelly’s badminton career saw her represent Scotland in a number of categories.
