The current situation has meant that gatherings of all kinds have been cancelled, which naturally has a huge impact on funerals and remembrance services when someone has passed away.
However, local funeral director Ian Johnston insists that although there may be restrictions in place, your loved one will still have the send off they deserve.
The number of people in attendance at funerals has now been reduced, meaning only immediate family members can attend. Plus, pallbearers are no longer permitted to carry coffins.
However, funeral services are being filmed so other mourners can catch from their homes, where they are encouraged to light candles.
Ian Johnston, who runs Ian Johnston Funeral Directors in Kirkcaldy, said: “We’re doing our utmost to be safe and keep families safe.
“Families are bey very, very understanding about the situation. They will still be getting the full love, professionalism and compassion, but we have to keep a distance.”
The Fife businessman explained that it is difficult for the funeral directors as they have been denied the chance to shake mourners’ hands or a comforting embrace, however, they are continuing to do their best to ensure that families are supported.
He added: “It’s difficult. It’s such a personal service and people are already at their most anxious and vulnerable, but now they are even more anxious and vulnerable.
“We need to be so much more compassionate when we can’t see families face-to-face and we can’t shake their hand or give them a hug.
“We’ve got to be the bereaved families’ strength. They look to us for everything and we have to portray that strength.”
